ALUMINUM HIGH / LOW PRESSURE LAUNCHING SYSTEM #1

THIS WILL BE A REVIEW OF THE DEF TEC ALUMINUM CASINGS USED IN THE 32 CAL STINGBALL ROUNDS. THE CASING USES A HIGH/LOW PRESSURE LAUNCHING SYSTEM. THE CASING ALSO USES A 38 SHORT COLT BLANK FOR PROPULSION. THE CASING TESTED MEASURES 4.75" TALL AND I TESTED BOTH THE 37/40MM AND THE 40MM VERSIONS. (BOTH ARE BASICALLY THE SAME EXCEPT FOR THE DIAMETER AND RIM OF THE 37/40 WHICH IS STEPPED TO ALLOW SOMEONE TO USE THIS ROUND IN EITHER A 37MM OR 40MM LAUNCHER). THE SIDEWALL THICKNESS OF THE CASING AT THE MOUTH IS .045" THICK. (MOST ALUMINUM CASINGS THAT USE BLACK POWDER MEASURE .035" THICK, SO THESE CASINGS ARE MUCH THICKER!).

THE BOTTOM OF THESE CASINGS CONTAINS A 38 SHORT COLT BLANK FOR PROPULSION, NOT UNLIKE THE M-212 NYLON CASING USED IN THE MILITARY M-781 PRACTICE ROUND. THIS CASING HOWEVER, IS SOLID ALUMINUM FROM THE BOTTOM, ALL THE WAY UP TO THE TOP OF THE SINGLE VENT HOLE. THE CASING HAS TWO SMALL "STEPS" INSIDE THAT GO UP FROM THE TOP OF THE VENT HOLE .165" (THESE CAN BE SEEN IN THE CUTAWAY PHOTO BELOW).

THIS CASING IS BASICALLY BUILT FOR POWER. IT HAS BASICALLY A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM WHICH AFTER THE PROJO STARTS MOVING CONVERTS INTO A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM. UNLIKE THE M-212 CASING WHICH HAS A BUILT IN LOW PRESSURE CHAMBER, THIS ROUND HAS ONLY A BUILT IN HIGH PRESSURE CHAMBER (UNLESS THE PROJO IS NOT FULLY SEATED INTO THE CASING, BUT ALLOWED TO STOP BETWEEN 1/4 AND 1/2" ABOVE THE VENT HOLE. THIS WOULD CREATE A LOW PRESSURE CHAMBER WITHIN THE CASING ITSELF AND CAN BE PRODUCED BY INSERTING A SHORT LENGTH OF BY-55 OR 56 MODEL ROCKET TUBING IN BEFORE YOUR PROJO, AND SEALING THE VENT HOLE WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE. THE BOTTOM INSIDE OF THE CASING HAS TO BE CLEAN SO THE TAPE WILL STICK). THE CUTAWAY IN THE PHOTO BELOW WAS CUT SHORTER PRIOR TO MAKING THE CUTAWAY TO SAVE SOME OF MY SAW BLADE, AND TO KEEP THE SIDE WALLS FROM BENDING.

IN MY OPINION, THIS CASING, FOR THE RE-LOADER, WOULD BE BEST USED FOR ROUNDS NOT USING A FUSED PROJECTILE, SUCH AS RUBBER SHOT, BUCKSHOT, FLECHETTES, AND SO ON. FUSED PROJECTILES CAN BE USED WITH THIS CASING, HOWEVER, SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS MUST BE OBSERVED. THE HIGH PRESSURE GENERATED FROM THE 38 SHORT COLT BLANK IS VERY POTENT WITHOUT THE LOW PRESSURE CHAMBER, AND IF YOUR PROJO IS SEATED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CASING, MOST LIKELY IT WILL BE BLOWN APART BY THE PRESSURE. IF YOU LEAVE A "LOW PRESSURE CHAMBER" ABOVE THE VENT HOLE OF APPROX 1/2" TO 3/4", THEN MOST PROJOS WE USE NOW WOULD BE ABLE TO BE LAUNCHED USING THIS CASING AND A CHARGE OF 5-7 GRAINS OF BULLSEYE PISTOL POWDER. THE RELOADING OF THIS CASING AND OTHERS WILL BE COVERED IN GREATER DETAIL ON GROG'S ADVANCED RELOADING CD.

YUP, THAT'S RIGHT, I'M DOING ANOTHER CD!! THERE ARE SO MANY NEW PRODUCTS AND CASINGS OUT THERE, I AM STARTING A NEW RELOADING INFO DISC. THIS DISC WILL CONTAIN MORE ADVANCED INFO REGARDING RELOADING, AND LESS ROUND PHOTOS AND BEGINNERS TIPS. I HOPE TO HAVE, BY THEN, A HIGH QUALITY DIGITAL CAMERA THAT I CAN USE TO MAKE SHORT VIDEOS TO ASSIST THE RE-LOADER IN DOING IT PROPERLY AND SHOWING THE END RESULTS (SOME STAR CLUSTERS BURSTING, NINJA SMOKE BURST ROUNDS GOING OFF, MAGNESIUM BURST ROUNDS GOING OFF, THE EFFECTS OF FLECHETTES AND BUCKSHOT AT DIFFERENT RANGES ON DIFFERENT TARGETS... AND HANDS ON HOW TO! (IF I CAN GET THE WIFE TO HOLD THE CAMERA...)

IT'S GONNA TAKE A LOT OF TIME DOING THIS CD, AS IT WILL CONTAIN SHORT VIDEOS, AND MORE IN DEPTH RELOADING STUFF, SO I CAN'T SET A DATE AS TO WHEN IT WILL BE COMPLETED AS OF YET. JUST SOMETHING TO LET YOU GUYS LOOK FORWARD TO!!
